Commuting
This series existed only in my head for a long time. The picture of Hakaniemi subway station in Helsinki (header image) was one of the first shots in the series I saw as “Commuting”.
The image of the escalators cooked in my head for a good number of years. When I first came to Finland in the end of the nineties, these escalators in Kamppi subway station, were one of the longest in Europe. I found them very photogenic from the first time I set foot on them. Only back then I had a cheaper film camera with not too good glass and the few images I shot were really just a waste of film (deleting is SO much easier and cheaper these days!). It was not until a full decade later that I shot the one in this portfolio.
I wanted them to be empty. But yeah… Good luck with that, in one of the busiest subway stations in the capital of a country. I managed a few images with a few people in them and with such a long exposure that most of the people were entirely blurred, but that was actually quite boring. Until I got this bold idea. I would just step in closer, set up the tripod to block the center escalator─just for a moment─so that would be empty and there’d be people on the two outer escalators. That turned out very nice, I think. And no… also no police involved in this one, but yes, I did get some angry looks and some bad words. But alas… how nice it is to be able to pretend you’re just a weird foreign tourist?
Deze serie leefde lange tijd enkel in mijn hoofd. De foto van Hakaniemi metrostation in Helsinki (hoofdafbeelding) was één van de eerste foto’s uit die serie die ik zag als “Commuting”.
De foto’s van de roltrappen hebben een flink aantal jaren in mijn hoofd gemarineerd. Toen ik voor het eerst naar Finland reisde aan het eind van de 90-er jaren, waren deze roltrappen één van de langste in Europa. Ik vond ze vanaf het begin heel erg fotogeniek. Alleen had ik toen een goedkope filmcamera met niet zo heel goede lenzen en de paar foto’s die ik ervan had genomen waren gewoon weggegooide film (in de prullenbak gooien is tegenwoordig zo veel makkelijker en goedkoper!). Het was een heel decennium later dat ik de foto in dit portfolio nam.
Ik wilde ze graag leeg, de roltrappen. Maar ja… succes daarmee, in één van de drukste metrostations in de hoofdstad van een land. Ik kreeg het voor elkaar een paar foto’s te schieten met een paar mensen erin en met zo’n lange sluitertijd dat de meeste mensen volledig wazig waren, maar dat was eigenlijk best saai. Toen kreeg ik dit gewaagde idee. Een paar stappen dichterbij, met de de driepoot opgezet om de middelste roltrap te blokkeren, heel even maar!, zodat die leeg zou zijn en er op de buitenste mensen zouden staan. Die is best goed geworden, vind ik zelf. En nee… ook deze keer geen politie erbij, maar inderdaad, wel een aantal boze blikken en wat scheldwoorden. Maar alas… hoe mooi is het dat je net kunt doen alsof je gewoon een rare, buitenlandse toerist bent?
