Solitude in
Black Tie
In 2008 I spent a summer in Missoula, Montana, to do an intensive photography course. As a graduation project we had to come up with an exhibition of photographs, (post-)processed as we wanted and printed and/or framed as we saw fit for the photos we wanted to exhibit. I struggled for the longest time with what I wanted/could do. I had plenty of material, but I didn’t “just” want a series of macro shots. Or a series of landscapes or a series of rodeos. I was fiddling a bit with converting to black and white, and I got the idea of “Solitude in Black Tie”.
Reading the Artist’s Statement from then now, I cringe a bit. It seems incoherent nonsense to me now. They are nice words, and their meaning still ring true, stand-alone, but in combination with the imagery it makes no sense to me anymore now. The initial thought was to photograph very characteristic trees, and turn them into stark black and white, portraying the “Solitude in Black Tie”. Along the way I found images portraying “Solitude” much better than those original images I used for my graduation, and not just trees.
The original three images I still have hanging in my office. They have special importance to me, even if for an exhibition I probably wouldn’t pick these anymore.
In 2008 heb ik een zomer doorgebracht in Missoula, Montana, voor een intensieve fotografiecursus. Als afstudeerproject moesten we een fotografietentoonstelling bedenken, vrij in fotobewerking en afgedrukt en/of ingelijst, zoals we dat voor ons zagen en best passend bij onze foto’s. Het heeft heel lang geduurd voordat ik wist wat ik wilde. Ik had meer dan genoeg materiaal, maar ik wilde niet “gewoon” een serie macrofoto’s. Of een serie landschappen. Of een serie rodeofoto’s. Op een gegeven moment was ik een beetje aan het klooien met zwart/wit conversies en toen kreeg ik het idee van “Solitude in Black Tie”.
Als ik nu de Artiestenverklaring teruglees, krijg ik wel een beetje kippenvel, en niet van het goede type. Het klinkt me nu als onsamenhangende onzin in de oren. Het zijn mooie woorden en hun betekenis hebben nog steeds een kern van waarheid, op zichzelf, maar niet in combinatie met de foto’s. Aanvankelijk ging het om het fotograferen van heel karakteristieke bomen en die om te zetten naar contrastrijk zwart/wit, wat dan de “Solitude in Black Tie zou weergeven. Gaandeweg vond ik beelden die de “Solitude” veel beter uitbeeldden, dan die originele foto’s die ik heb gebruikt voor het afstudeerproject, en niet alleen maar bomen.
De originele drie foto’s hangen nog steeds in mijn kantoortje. Ze hebben toch wel een speciale betekening voor me, zelfs al zou ik deze waarschijnlijk niet meer kiezen voor een tentoonstelling.
