PMS
I was working as a full-colour printer in a large-ish printing house. Part of the job─obviously─was mixing inks from the Pantone Matching System. Most of the times when we had to mix inks, the first thing we had to do was scrape off the skin which had dried up on top of the ink.
Along the line I learned that depending on the time the ink had not been used (had been drying up, so to speak) in combination with the basic viscosity of the ink, the patterns growing in the skin forming on the ink would differ.
That gave me the idea for “PMS”.
Het idee voor deze serie kreeg ik lang geleden, in de tijd dat fotografie nog slechts een hobby voor me was. Ik werkte als vierkleurendrukker in een middelgrote drukkerij. Onderdeel van de baan was, natuurlijk, het mengen van inkt volgens het Pantone Matching System. Vaak voordat we begonnen met inkt mengen, moesten we eerst het vel van de inkt afschrapen wat er opgedroogd was.
In de loop van de tijd leerde ik dat, afhankelijk van hoelang de inkt niet gebruikt was (tijd had om op te drogen, zeg maar) in combinatie met de viscositeit van de inkt, de patronen die op het vel vormden verschillend waren.
Dat bracht me op het idee van “PMS”.
