the .tulip country
Once a year for a few weeks the Netherlands turns into Tulip Country.
Especially in the western part of the country several areas explode into colour when the tulip flowers break the soil and open their buds.
As far as the eyes can see
It’s one of those things which─for me─never gets boring.
Depending on the weather we either take the car or the bike and off we go. We’re lucky to live pretty much in Ground Zero of Tulip Explosion. Within five minutes by car, and actually not much more than that with the bike, we are at the edge of where all this beauty starts.
Fields of tulips as far as the eyes can see. And in nearly every colour of the rainbow.
Ironic
The Netherlands is known globally for its tulips, but did you know that tulips don’t originate from the Netherlands?
Tulips originally came from the mountainous regions of Tian Shan in Central Asia. The first cultivated versions of tulips were recorded in the 10th century in Persia (the current Iran) by Turkish people. Only in the end of 16th century were they introduced in Europe / the Netherlands by the Dutch traders.
But we did “make it our thing”. The Dutch cultivated the lion share of different types and the different colours of tulips.
Up close and personal
Most people admire the bigger picture, like the landscapes as shown above. Or from slightly closer by, in a bouquet of tulips. What most people don’t usually do, is take a really close up view. That’s where the macro lens comes into play. Details of the tulip make for fantastic wall art.
Imagine how a colourful image like that looks on your wall…
